1/23/09 Right Spot at Gas Chambers

There was also suppose to be another Monk that surfaced today at Laniakea, but as of now, I don't have any pictures of her. We'll see if someone got there to document it.

Well someone did show up and document that it was 5AY (Honey Girl) Tracy showed me pics and I uploaded them, but they're not coming out good. I'll keep trying to post them soon.

Aloha DB!
Could this sighting possible break the day record of 13 seals? These pics were sent to me by honu guardians at Laniakea who spotted this seal that hauled up at about 4pm on Laniakea Beach, January 23rd. Any idea who it is? They did not see flipper tags and thought it might be a male.

Aloha,
Jen

Who are the oldest monks on Oahu?

When I have a Monk question I ask a Monk Master, well not just A monk master, but The Monk Master. In fact he's so much of a Master Monker, the Monks even think he's one of them. So I ask the Master . . . DB: Who R the oldest Monks (male or female) on Oahu?

Hana:
In answer to you query about who is the oldest critter, 4DJ (aka T21M) is amongst them. 4DJ (T21M), 4DI (T757), TT40,& T15M (aka Sharkbite) where all first identified in 1987, on Laysan. All of those animals were already adults (at least 5 yrs old) at that time which makes them minimum of 27 today, but they could be older too. None had been seen at birth, so that is as close as we can come. All are males. There are 2 other animals, R2AW (T34M), and R5AW (TF20), who were seen in 1988, also on Laysan, and again were already adult males. Those are the oldest dudes in my world. All spend time on Oahu but all have been seen on other islands as well.

Aloha, DB

1-8-9 5AY at Papailoa

Honeygirl soaking up the sun at Papailoa Reef. A girl came by and told us of a time last May or so when this very large monk was on the reef in about the same spot. We told her that this was the same one, but that she had given birth. It was a fun conversation.

The tag is not all the clear because of the glare of the sun, but you still can see that it is in fact 5AY or Honeygirl.

Joanne from the Honu guardians was there first and took a bunch of pictures.

1-6-9 Unknown Monk at Gas Chambers

Halfway between Pipeline (ehukai beach park) and Rocky Point (by Sunset beach) we found this lady. My guess? Right spot. She's the only one I know about who does not have any natural scars or bite marks, is relatively clean and doesn't smoke on her lunch breaks.

1-4-09 4 DJ was out at Kaena Pt.

These photos were courtesy of DB's wife. By his own words, DB said he is not going to hike all they way out to Kaena Pt. (almost 2 1/2 miles) from the end of the road to where 4DJ decided to beach himself. So Mrs. DB had to capture the experience on foot today. But since these photo's were not from my camera, I can only post what he sent me. As a result, you may not be able to get a close up by clicking onto the picture as you can in other posts.

When we left the adventure, 4DJ was snoozin' at Alii Beach Park, in Haleiwa as dark approached. Then, this morning at 11:05 my wife found him still snoozin' but at Ka'ena Point. The boy does get around. His markers, the natural bleach on the forehead, the brown tag nub, and the "VO2" bleach on his side, were all visible. Aloha, DB

1-3-09 Alii Beach Monk

Bleach mark might read VO2 / VOR / or VOP hard to tell! Then DB got ahold of the pictures and here's what he says: "Aloha Hana, Thank You ......very much for the help with the Alii Beach animal this evening. Your photos confirmed that this is an old, adult male."

His old Laysan (brown) tag, (4DJ) is just a nub, with just the triangular part of the "4" remaining, on his right hind flipper, and easily missed. His permanent ID number is T21M, which is how the office refers to him. He got what is supposed to be a "V02" bleach on Kauai a while back. Just for future reference, Oahu animals get an "N" bleach, Kauai gets a "V" bleach.

4DJ was on Molokai in 1994, and was first seen on Oahu in 2004. He has also been documented on trips to Kauai, and Lehua Rock. He has been documented in all quadrants of Oahu, but interestingly enough he has never been seen on the North Shore until today. His last Oahu sighting was in Maili on 12-6-08. 4DJ does his annual molt in January, which is why he appears so green.

Though he is a ol' dude with lots of scars, he is best identified by a very prominent natural bleach white spot on his forehead , above his right eye, and of course by the nub of his tag. I'll attach a few shots of 4DJ from previous visits. Once again, Ya' Done Good ! DB

It looks like an older monk, but not one we've seen around here. DB says "He is a minimum of 26 years old, having first been seen as an adult (at least 5 y.o.) on Laysan in 1987."
