Lona goes fishing

Lona was seen swimming in the Haleiwa Boat harbor Friday afternoon (3-28-10) She was seen swimming near the construction area chasing some fish. According to the reports I got, she was chasing and catching talapia. Then she swam all around the boat harbor then finally back out to sea. And you thought it was hard catching fish with a spear and fins? Try catching them with your mouth! U go Lona.

O-38 at Sharks Cove 3-29-10

I could not get my flash to work and could not focus because he was heading back into the water. I just got there in time to see his return to the water. But I only saw on the tag a #38. DB later clarifies that there is a Pup on Oahu with the Tags O-38. So it must be him/her. One thing I can say is that there were two tags but I clearly saw only one. I didn't see any scars or markings, it was dark and I only had seconds to photo snap what I could.

Sharkbite 3-28-10

Shark Bite shows up at Kaiakas just after 6am this morning. And while Shark Bite was busy resting on the beach, another monk was swimming in the water chasing or playing with a stick that was floating near by. I couldn't tell who that one was.

sealonthebeach@gmail.com 11:53 PM (6 hours ago)to me

Hi Todd, I will send u the official information with dates and outcome. But to tell u the short version. We had two seals with swallowed hooks. Unfortunately SB's hook was farther down in the stomach area. He underwent invasive surgery and seemed to be recovering. Several days after the surgery, it was determined that he had complications, somewhat due to his age and parasites. He was believed to be around 28 yrs. old. He kept going downhill and stopped eating (we had him at the Waikiki Aquarium for nearly two weeks). On May 19th he was humanely enuthasized. A terrible heartbreak for so many caregivers that had hoped he would once again overcome all odds. We all loved that hapless critter and were in awe of his ability to survive. It will be a celebration of his long life and his ashes will be returned to the ocean by Hawaiian ceremony and blessing with dignity and love for this great seal that touched so many. I will send u the official report from the vets and the scientists. So sorry to be the bearer of bad news. God bless Shark Bite. Dana

3-23-10 KC lands between Chuns & Waimea

Can DB guess who this is?

This lady "KC" came up between "No Name" Rd. and Left Overs. Or just 5 miles outside Haleiwa and 1 mile before Waimea Bay on the Makai side of the road, Mauka side of the ocean kinda by the beach area.

Here's the official word: It looks like you spent some time with our phat girl , KC (Kaaawa Critter). Her numerous Cookie Cutter scars and that fishing line scar at the left corner of her mouth are sure KC markers. It looks like she's gone and done it again. Judging by girth I'd say there is a pup in her near future. How near is just a tad "iffy" since she definitely gave birth last year, but at an unknown location, so there is no info on when. She was seen on 5-9-09, fat, and 7-9-09 skinny, so the window is in there somewhere. Forecasting from the previous years birth at Mokuleia, she probably give birth last year somewhere around 5-28-09, which means that this year will probably be in the 2nd week of June, 2010. I'll put a dollar on 6-11-10 in the pool. Aloha, DB

F-2 at Alii Beach 3-19-10

DB & Tracy confirm this is Lona who frequents Maui and Molokai, is probably pregnant and will probably pup on Molokai. DB guesses that Lona will give birth around June 10 this year. And he guesses she'll give birth on Kalaupapa Molokai. Lets see how close he gets. Apparently Lona is one very fertile wahine.

Lona stuck around for at least a second day thru Saturday night. Then I got this post from Todd E. which said:

Aloha,

On 3/25 at approx. 3pm a seal F2, crawled up on our beach and hung out
for about an hour. Location was crozier drive at mahani'ai st. Lona
was awesome and absolutely made our vacation. She just hung out rubbed
her face and rolled around, oh and sneezed every now and then. Alas, a
dog came down the beach and she headed back in the water.

Thanks for the blog, it was neat to see a little bit of her past
adventures. Definetely a highlight for a couple east coasters who don't see seals.
